UPJ Obstruction and Robotic Surgery
UPJ Obstruction and Robotic Surgery
The ureter is a long, thin tube through which urine travels from the kidney down to the bladder. A ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction occurs when there is a blockage of the junction between the kidney and the ureter, often due to scar tissue or natural changes in anatomy over time. Due to a UPJ obstruction, urine will not be able to adequately drain from the kidney down to the bladder as it normally should. This results in an increase in pressure within the kidney due to trapped urine. The increased pressure can result in deterioration of kidney function over time, therefore prompt identification and treatment of UPJ obstruction is paramount in preserving kidney function. Traditionally, UPJ obstructions were managed with major open surgery to remove the diseased portion of the ureter and reconnect the ureter to the kidney. Recently there have been more minimally invasive methods for managing a UPJ obstruction. At Urology of Hudson Valley, Dr. Sayegh provides prompt diagnostic services and management options to those who are suffering from a UPJ obstruction.
